A new season of outdoor biting
A temperature increase may signal a new season of outdoor itching, caused by some of the best of nature: mosquitoes, wood ticks or worse, poison ivy. That nasty rash is caused by an allergic reaction to urushiol, an oil found in poison ivy, oak and sumac causes a reaction in 20 to 30 million people in the U.S. each year. Urushiol is so powerful that you only need a small brush with these plants to cause an outbreak. Even staying indoors can not stay safe, many poison ivy outbreaks are caused by indirect contact. Learn to recognize and avoid plants that could be poison ivy, oak or sumac. These plants usually have three leaflets, but can range from three to nine groups, and grow as a ground cover, vine or shrub. If in doubt, do not touch! Every part of the plant, the leaves, stems and roots-has urushiol and can cause a reaction.
To avoid exposure, wear clothing that completely covers the legs and arms. When you return home, wash clothes and use an exfoliating skin removal to be sure.
